DMD technology: digital micro-mirror device (DMDTM) is the basis of DLP. Other elements of DLP projector include a light source, a color filtering system, a cooling system, lighting and projection optical elements.

DMD can be described simply as a semiconductor optical switch. Thousands of tiny square lenses are built on hinges over static random access memory to form the DMD. Each lens can turn on or off a pixel of light. The hinge structure allows the lens to tilt between two states. +12 degrees means "on", and -12 degrees means "off". When the lenses are not working, they are in a "parking" state of 0 degrees.

Each tiny and precise mirror is like an artificial "group of tiles", but these micromirrors will be flipped at a certain frequency according to the corresponding control signal, so as to reflect the light from the light source in the visual system as graphics pixels with rich layers of colors by means of the temporary phenomenon of vision.

DMD projectors can be divided into single - plate, double - plate and three - plate types according to the number of reflective lenses.

Monolithic DLP system: in a single DMD projection system, a color separation wheel is used to produce a full-color projected image. The separation wheel consists of a red, green, and blue filtering system that rotates at 60Hz to provide 180 color fields per second. In this structure, DLP works in sequential color mode.

The input signals are converted into RGB data, which are written to the SRAM of DMD in sequence. The white light source focuses on the color separation wheel through the focusing lens, and the light through the color separation wheel is then imaged on the surface of DMD. As the color separation wheel rotates, red, green, and blue light appear sequentially on the DMD. The color wheel and video images are performed in sequence, so when red light hits the DMD, the lens tilts to "on" according to the position and intensity of the red information that should be displayed, and so do green and blue light and video signals. The human visual system concentrates red, green and blue information and sees a full color image. Through a projection lens, the image formed on the DMD surface can be projected onto a large screen.

Because DMD has a switching speed of less than 20 microseconds, an 8 bit/color grayscale (256 grayscale) can be achieved with a single DMD system. This gives each primary color 256 shades of gray, or 256 to the third power of color combinations.
